Descriptive Inventory of Lists at Ida Public Library - Local History Section

A charter and life member of the WBCGS, Marty Johnson has been instrumental in obtaining much of the genealogical material found at the Ida Public Library in Belvidere. At the March 2001 WBCGS meeting, he spoke of the Library’s many resources.

The History Room is located in the basement of the Library, and microfilm and microfiche reader printers are available. There is an obituary card index, with most obituaries being from recent years. Many books and manuscripts on local families are at Ida. Marty warned that, while a family history book has only one name on the cover, it may contain hundreds of other names, so look inside.

The Ida History Room has an extensive microfilm collection, including Boone County censuses for 1840-1920. Marty has just finished typing the 1865 Boone County census and is almost finished with 1855. Belvidere newspapers on microfilm cover 1848 through November 2000, and more will be added. There are also military records for the Black Hawk, Mexican, Spanish American and Civil Wars. Some of these records cover all of Illinois, not just Boone County. Birth, marriage, and death certificates have been microfilmed, with the years covered varying by type of record. Church records are an ongoing project.

Microfiche at Ida consists of Illinois land sales, marriage and death indexes, as well as Wisconsin vital records. These are a small amount of the total microfiche available.

While Ida History Room’s microfilms and microfiche cover mainly Boone County, an extensive CD collection covers all of the U.S. There are CDs of genealogies, vital records, census records and more. The following CDs have been added to the collection at the Ida Public Library in Belvidere and are available in the local history/genealogy room:
